One of the quickest ways to connect a wireless printer to your home Wi‑Fi network without entering a password.
Introduction
Many broadband provider routers include a feature called WPS (Wi‑Fi Protected Setup). WPS allows compatible devices, such as printers, to join your wireless network without manually entering the Wi‑Fi password.
This can be particularly useful when:
- Setting up a new wireless printer
- Replacing a router
- Moving a printer to a new network
- Helping less technical users connect devices
Most major broadband providers include WPS on their routers, including BT, Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, and Vodafone.
What Is WPS?
WPS is a feature designed to simplify wireless network setup.
Instead of entering a network name (SSID) and wifi password, the router and printer exchange information automatically.

Before You Start
Make sure:

Step 1: Locate the WPS Button on the Router

Step 2: Start WPS Mode on the Printer

Step 3: Press the Router’s WPS Button

- Hold it for 1–3 seconds if required.
- Release the button.
The router enters pairing mode for a short period, typically around two minutes.
Step 4: Wait for the Connection
On the printer, you may see “Connecting…” or “WPS In Progress) – It could take 2 or 3 minutes to connect, at which point you’ll see “Connected”.
Step 5: Print a Test Page
Once connected:
- Open Windows Settings.
- Select: Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners
- Select the Printer
- Print a Test Page
This confirms that the printer is communicating correctly with the network.
Common Problems
Printer Cannot Find the Router
Check:

✅ Printer is within range
✅ WPS was activated on both devices
✅ Setup was completed within the WPS timeout period
Security Note
WPS is designed to simplify device setup, but some security experts recommend disabling it once devices are connected if it is not regularly required.
